The 80% Towing Rule: Why Experienced Towers Leave a Margin
The 80% rule isn't a law or a manufacturer spec. It's a rule of thumb: keep your loaded trailer at or under 80% of the vehicle's towing rating.
Why leave a margin
- Real weight runs heavy. Most people underestimate what they're towing. See dry vs. loaded weight.
- Ratings are tested under set conditions. Real trips add mountain grades, heat, altitude, and headwinds.
- Big campers catch wind. A tall travel trailer is much harder to pull at highway speed than a heavy but low utility trailer of the same weight. Some manufacturers also cap trailer frontal area.
- Comfort and wear. Towing well under the limit is calmer to drive and easier on the transmission and brakes.
How we use it
Our checker gives three answers:
- Yes The trailer is at or under 80% of the rating.
- Close to limit It's between 80% and 100%. Legal by the rating, but with little room to spare.
- No It's over the rating, over your payload, or needs a hitch your vehicle can't take.
